- Do you need help keeping your house clean?
- Is changing the linens on your bed like a workout at the gym?
- Do you have difficulty driving at night or in the rain?
- Are you living on fast food and frozen dinners because cooking is too much trouble?
- Do you sometimes lose track of what day it is?
- Do you occasionally have a late charge because you forgot to pay a bill on time?
Age can sneak up on you and suddenly your life becomes a struggle to do the things you always did. I speak from experience, but I saw the direction things were going and made changes. My life is much simpler now, but I can still do the things I love to do. I am 80 and still working because I love my job.
Four years ago, I sold my house and moved into a 2-bedroom apartment in a Senior Independent Living Community. My rent includes all utilities and cable, weekly housekeeping service, limited transportation service, and 3 meals a day in a communal dining room but I still have a full kitchen for times when I want to cook. My 2nd bedroom is my office. I partner with another real estate agent in my office because I no longer drive but I am the "rainmaker".
Consider making changes in your life before making those changes becomes an emergency. Explore your options. You may want a college student to come live with you and do the things you can't do in exchange for reduced rent. Family may be encouraging you to move in with them. Or you may want to move to a Senior apartment or a Senior Independent Living Community similar to the one that I chose.
